Mont Saint-Michel, France

Beth Crawford

Mont Saint-Michel is an ancient medieval tiddle island on the Normandy side of France, with its first historical records dating back to 709 AD! Built by a priest after having a vision of St. Michael, it rapidly became a pilgrimage center and in 966 a Benedictine abbey was built there. It has served many purposes over the years, including being a monastery and a prison, But in the 18th century, only eight monks remained and it was added to the historical register, making it one of France's biggest attractions.

I had the wonderful experience touring this monument. There's a 3000ft walkway that takes visitors to the structure, and hundreds of steps branching off to various chapels and common areas. The tides are usually out, but in my image they are just beginning to creep back. Inside is a walled city with ramparts so that even when it was under attack, people could go about their daily lives fairly undisturbed.

I highly recommend viewing Mont Saint-Michel. However, if you aren't up to walking long distances and climbing endless stairs, you may have to pass. Aside from Paris, this has been my favorite place to

visit and photograph in France.
